OBDSTAR Major Update: Bench Read/Write & Unlock for Bosch MG1/MD1 ECUs

OBDSTAR is rolling out a major firmware and software update that brings secure, local Bosch MG1 and MD1 ECU decryption, read/write, and unlocking capabilities directly to your workshop bench. This update is a game-changer for shops working on modern BMW, Ford, and FCA vehicles, eliminating the need for expensive third-party unlocking services.

OBDSTAR Major Update

Why This Update Matters

Modern Bosch MG1 and MD1 engine control units are equipped with advanced encryption and anti-tuning security measures that make them notoriously difficult to read, write, or unlock. Previously, workshops often had to ship ECUs to specialized service providers for remote unlocking. OBDSTAR’s new update changes that by enabling local bench-mode unlocking and programming—saving time, reducing costs, and giving workshops full control over the process.

Supported ECU Models & Microchips (First Wave)

The initial release targets some of the most common and high-demand vehicle platforms on the road today:

  • Bosch MD1CP032 (BMW B58) — TC299
  • Bosch MG1CS024 (BMW B48/B58) — TC298
  • Bosch MG1CS201 (BMW B48/B58) — TC298
  • Bosch MD1CS069 (FCA / Stellantis) — TC299
  • Bosch MD1CP006 (Ford) — TC298
  • Bosch MD1CS089 (Isuzu / diesel applications) — TC299 (ECU Master HD Pack C only)

OBDSTAR has confirmed that additional ECU models are currently undergoing testing and will be added in consecutive rollouts.

Core Supported Functions

This isn’t just a basic reader. OBDSTAR is delivering a complete, professional-grade bench solution:

  • Read/Write INT Flash — Full read and write access to the internal flash memory
  • Read/Write INT EEPROM — Complete EEPROM read/write capabilities
  • ECU Unlocking — Boot-mode unlock for encrypted MG1/MD1 ECUs
  • Automatic Checksum Correction — Built-in checksum correction ensures data integrity after write operations

The unlock procedure is performed in boot mode, after which read and write operations can be carried out on the bench.

Hardware Requirements: What You Need to Get Ready

To take advantage of this update the moment it drops, make sure your bench is equipped with the following:

Compatible OBDSTAR Devices

This update runs seamlessly on the following OBDSTAR platforms:

  • OBDSTAR X300 Classic G3 — A comprehensive diagnostic and programming tablet
  • OBDSTAR DC706 ECU Tool — Specialized for ECU cloning and advanced module programming
  • OBDSTAR ECU MASTER — PC-based professional ECU flasher for high-volume bench work

Required Adapter

You will need the OBDSTAR RH850/V850 Adapter Kit, operating in combination with the C4-06 adapter board. This adapter is essential for boot-mode unlocking and communication with the MG1/MD1 ECUs.

Important Note: For diesel MD1CS089 ECU unlocking, only the ECU Master HD Pack C configuration is supported.

How the Process Works

The workflow is straightforward:

  1. Connect the RH850/V850 adapter kit (with C4-06 board) to your compatible OBDSTAR device and the target ECU.
  2. Unlock the ECU in boot mode using the new software update.
  3. Read the INT Flash and EEPROM data on the bench.
  4. Modify or clone the data as needed.
  5. Write the modified data back to the ECU with automatic checksum correction.

This eliminates the need to open the ECU shell repeatedly for each operation—once unlocked, read/write can be performed on the bench with full autonomy.

Which OBDSTAR Device Should You Choose?

Understanding the differences between the compatible devices will help you choose the right tool for your workshop:

  • X300 Classic G3 is a comprehensive diagnostic tool that can be expanded with ECU, IMMO, and mileage correction licenses. It’s the all-in-one choice for workshops that handle diagnostics, key programming, and ECU work.
  • DC706 is specialized for ECU/BCM/TCU cloning and programming. It offers wider ECU coverage than the G3 but cannot be expanded with IMMO or mileage functions.
  • ECU Master is a PC-based flasher designed for professional, high-volume ECU cloning and advanced electronics repair. It’s the tool of choice for workshops focused exclusively on ECU work.

Final Thoughts

OBDSTAR’s MG1/MD1 update represents a significant step forward in making advanced ECU programming accessible to independent workshops. By enabling local bench-mode unlocking and programming, OBDSTAR is empowering technicians to work on some of the most challenging modern ECUs without relying on external services.
